With over a decade's worth of sedulous work and a robust catalog that reaches far beyond the electronic music sphere, Denver-based artist Sectra has left a distinct mark on every project he graces. Known for poignantly distorted soundscapes, his latest EP is a slight change of pace that delivers a more refined, emotive project overall.
Allowing himself to draw influences from a shifting environment while still maintaining certain qualities of his renowned formula, Sectra’s progression is unhindered by trends, but rather maturity. Keeping a close eye on his breakthrough dubstep and noise releases on worldwide labels over the years, there has been a noticeable transition from his tear-out distortion tactics to a more dynamic range in production. “Desiccation EP” showcases this adaptation, touching on eccentric genres such as deconstructed club, dark ambient, slowed techno, and everything in between.
No style or tempo is safe from the wrath of Sectra - the EP begins with its title track in his native 140 BPM. A different approach to his flagship dubstep production, “Desiccation” focuses more on stirring pads yet still wields remnants of his old distorted ways. “Peaking In A Pool Of Film” is a genuine nod to deconstructed club, with a stripped-down percussive sound wrapped in elegance. “Bloody Porcelain” introduces a unique take on dark hip-hop beats, featuring a blown-out bassline and shuffling percussion that sounds like the track is being dragged through an alley of nails. A clear peak in the project is felt with “They Shrink Back To Their Silken Beds” - poetic synths fill the stereo while the low-end rattles amidst each kick. The EP cools down with “Stopping Hoax,” a brilliant finale where poisoned and hollow techno meet a roughened industrial sound.
”Desiccation EP” is a testament to Sectra’s growth through an era of producing grueling, unforgiving music. He has learned to continue withholding skin-crawling moments effectively, all while capturing the essence of a newfound expression through sound. Rather than being expectedly rugged around the edges, his latest project feels pristine and precise in what it seeks to accomplish. His journey of conveying human development through audible stories continues…
The visual concept behind "Desiccation EP" was to create tangible, 1-of-1 art pieces based on its cover. Made in TouchDesigner by Nic Juister, all 50 limited edition prints have been procedurally generated to react with the audio. They each mark a unique point in time within the EP and allow listeners to personally own a slice of the project.
